Where is the tetanus shot given?

Vaccines are placed into muscle tissue so the dose can be absorbed and processed by the immune system. For an adult, the upper arm is commonly used. The clinician may choose another suitable muscle for a child or for someone whose arm cannot be used. The injection site is separate from the wound: a cut on the hand or leg does not mean the vaccine is injected into that area.

Tell the vaccinator about previous vaccine reactions, allergies, current illness, pregnancy, or medicines that affect immunity. Wear clothing that allows access to the upper arm. If the shot follows an injury, gently rinse visible dirt away and cover the wound while arranging an assessment. Do not put strong chemicals into a deep wound or attempt to close it yourself.

Get urgent care for uncontrolled bleeding, loss of feeling or movement, a deep puncture, an animal or human bite, a wound with a foreign object, or rapidly worsening swelling and pain. Jaw tightness, difficulty swallowing, muscle spasms, or breathing problems after an injury require emergency help. The injection site can be mildly sore, but severe swelling, faintness, or breathing difficulty after vaccination needs immediate assessment.

Ask which muscle will receive the injection, how to keep the area comfortable afterward, and whether your wound needs more than vaccination. Ask the clinician to check your record if you cannot remember earlier tetanus-containing doses.
