Can a tetanus shot be given in the buttocks?

Vaccines need to reach suitable muscle tissue so the body can respond as intended. The buttock can contain a variable amount of fat and lies near important nerves, so it should not be chosen casually or injected by an untrained person.

Tell the vaccinator about allergies, bleeding problems, medicines that affect clotting, previous fainting, and any reaction after an earlier tetanus-containing vaccine. Ask which muscle and product are planned if you are worried about the location. Afterward, keep the area clean and follow the clinician’s advice. Mild soreness, redness, or swelling near the injection can occur; ask for help if the reaction is severe or worsening.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling, widespread hives, collapse, or rapidly worsening symptoms after vaccination. Contact a clinician for severe pain, increasing redness, marked swelling, drainage, fever, numbness, or weakness around an injection site. If the shot was given in an unexpected location and you have persistent pain or altered sensation, arrange an assessment rather than repeatedly pressing or massaging the area.

Ask why a particular muscle was selected, whether the vaccine was administered into muscle tissue, and what local reactions are expected. If the injection was given in the buttocks, ask whether any follow-up is needed and how your injury affects the rest of your tetanus protection plan.
