Tetanus shot at a pharmacy: what to know

A pharmacist or vaccination professional can check available records, screen for vaccine concerns and provide an injection where the service is authorised and equipped. That does not necessarily replace examination of a puncture, bite, crush injury or retained object. The injury details and your prior tetanus doses determine whether pharmacy vaccination alone is suitable.

Call the pharmacy to ask whether it offers tetanus vaccination, whether an appointment is needed and what identification or vaccine records to bring. Describe the injury and when it occurred. Rinse the wound with clean water, clean the surrounding skin and cover it. Do not delay wound assessment when the injury is deep, dirty or difficult to inspect.

Choose urgent medical assessment for a deep puncture, bite, crush wound, heavy contamination, foreign object, uncontrolled bleeding or reduced sensation. Increasing warmth, redness, swelling, pus, fever or impaired movement also needs review. Jaw stiffness, swallowing difficulty, spasms or breathing difficulty require emergency help rather than a routine pharmacy visit.

Ask whether the pharmacist can assess this wound, whether your vaccine history changes the recommendation, whether you need another preventive treatment, and where to go if the pharmacy cannot provide the full assessment.
