Tetanus shot after a wound: what to know

Tetanus bacteria can enter through broken skin. Wounds with soil, saliva, dead tissue, puncture tracks or foreign material may receive closer attention than clean, minor injuries. A clinician combines those details with your previous tetanus-containing vaccines. The need for a booster cannot be decided from bleeding alone, because a small-looking wound may still be deep.

Wash your hands, rinse the wound with clean running water and gently clean the surrounding skin. Remove loose dirt if it comes away easily, then use a clean dressing. Do not use a needle, blade or unprescribed substance to widen or treat the wound. Seek advice with the wound location, cause, contamination, depth and date of your last known tetanus vaccination.

Arrange prompt care for a deep or gaping wound, a bite, a crush injury, tissue that looks dead, a foreign object, or a wound involving the eye, hand, foot or joint. Seek care for worsening redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever or reduced movement. Emergency services are needed for jaw stiffness, swallowing trouble, spasms or breathing difficulty.
