Tetanus shot after a cut: what to know

A cut breaks the skin barrier, allowing bacteria to enter. Tetanus risk is considered more carefully when a cut contains soil or debris, has crushed edges, is deep, or cannot be cleaned fully. A clean, minor cut may be managed differently from a contaminated wound. The recommendation also depends on the tetanus-containing vaccines you have received and when the last dose was given, so the appearance of the cut alone cannot answer the vaccination question.

Wash your hands, rinse the cut under clean running water, and gently clean the surrounding skin. Apply firm pressure with clean gauze if it is bleeding, then cover the area with a clean dressing. Avoid picking at embedded material or trying to repair a deep or gaping wound at home. Arrange a medical review when the cut is contaminated, deep, caused by an object that may be dirty, or your vaccination record is incomplete or unavailable.

Seek urgent care if bleeding does not settle with sustained pressure, the cut is deep or gaping, a tendon or bone may be involved, or there is numbness or loss of movement. Prompt review is also needed for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, increasing pain, or fever. Difficulty swallowing, jaw stiffness, breathing problems, or severe muscle spasms are emergencies and need immediate help.

Ask whether the cut is clean and minor or needs additional wound treatment, whether your vaccine record changes the plan, and how to change the dressing. Ask which symptoms suggest infection and how quickly you should return if the wound opens or becomes more painful.
