Tetanus shot after 10 years: what to know

Tetanus is caused by bacteria that can enter through broken skin and release a toxin affecting the nervous system. Protection is maintained through a vaccination series and booster doses. Ten years is a useful routine checkpoint, but it does not by itself decide what you need after every injury. A clinician considers whether the wound is clean and minor or deeper, contaminated, punctured, or damaged tissue, as well as your previous doses and immune health.

Find any vaccination record and note when your last tetanus-containing vaccine was given. Clean a wound promptly with running water, remove visible dirt gently, and cover it with a clean dressing. Contact a clinic for advice if ten years have passed, the date is uncertain, or the wound is not clean and minor. Do not wait for tetanus symptoms before arranging a review. A clinician may recommend a booster and, in selected situations, additional protective treatment.

Seek urgent medical assessment for trouble breathing or swallowing, severe jaw or muscle stiffness, repeated painful spasms, confusion, or rapidly worsening illness. Get prompt wound care for a deep or heavily contaminated wound, a bite, tissue that cannot be cleaned, uncontrolled bleeding, or signs of infection such as spreading redness, swelling, warmth, pus, or fever.
