Tetanus in sheep: what people should know

Sheep can develop tetanus when bacteria enter damaged tissue, especially a puncture, surgical site, or wound contaminated with soil or manure. The toxin interferes with nerve signals and may cause stiffness, difficulty opening the mouth, a fixed facial expression, trouble swallowing, muscle spasms, or collapse. Tetanus is not generally spread by casual contact between people or animals. The concern for a person is usually a wound contaminated during farming, animal care, or contact with soil and animal waste.

Move away from the animal if it is having spasms or behaving unpredictably. Wash a wound thoroughly with clean running water and soap, remove visible dirt without digging into the tissue, and cover it with a clean dressing. Do not wait for symptoms before discussing the wound with a clinician. Tell them when the injury happened, how deep or dirty it was, whether a foreign object was involved, and when you last received tetanus vaccination. A clinician can decide whether wound care, vaccination, or additional preventive treatment is needed.

Seek emergency care immediately for jaw stiffness, painful muscle tightening, repeated spasms, trouble swallowing, breathing difficulty, or rapidly worsening stiffness after a wound. These symptoms need hospital assessment. Seek same-day medical advice for a deep, puncture, crush, or heavily contaminated wound, especially if vaccination history is uncertain. Keep the animal separated and contact a veterinarian for its care; do not attempt treatment that could put you at risk.
