What should you know about tetanus in a finger?

Tetanus is caused by a toxin made by bacteria that can enter damaged skin. A narrow puncture, crush injury, burn, or wound contaminated with soil or animal waste may create conditions where the bacteria grow. The finger wound itself may look modest while the illness affects nerves and muscles elsewhere.

Early warning signs can include tightening around the jaw, difficulty swallowing, painful muscle stiffness, or spasms triggered by touch, sound, or movement. A wound does not need to be visibly infected for tetanus to develop.

Rinse the wound under clean running water, remove visible dirt only if it comes away easily, and cover it with a clean dressing. Do not seal a deep puncture with glue or try to probe it. Ask whether the wound needs deeper cleaning, whether your vaccination record provides current protection, and which symptoms should prompt immediate return.
