Tetanus from dog bite symptoms: what to know

Tetanus is caused by a toxin made by bacteria that enter through damaged skin. A bite can create a contaminated puncture, especially when tissue is deep or hard to clean. Early features may include jaw stiffness, trouble opening the mouth, difficulty swallowing, neck or abdominal stiffness, and painful muscle tightening. Symptoms may develop after a delay rather than immediately after the bite. A dog bite can also cause bacterial wound infection, tendon injury, or nerve damage, which need different assessment. A dog bite does not itself diagnose tetanus; vaccination history and the wound determine preventive care.

Rinse the wound under clean running water and wash around it with soap. Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze if it is bleeding, then cover it with a fresh dressing. Do not close a deep puncture yourself or pour harsh chemicals into it. Contact a clinician promptly, even if the wound looks small, and tell them when the bite happened, whether the dog is known, and when your last tetanus dose was given. A clinician may assess the need for wound treatment, antibiotics, rabies advice, and a tetanus vaccine or other preventive medicine. Do not wait for symptoms before checking your immunisation record.

Seek emergency help for jaw locking, repeated muscle spasms, breathing difficulty, trouble swallowing, confusion, or rapidly worsening stiffness. Get same-day assessment for a deep or dirty bite, uncontrolled bleeding, severe pain, loss of movement or sensation, a bite to the face or hand, or increasing redness, warmth, swelling, or discharge. Urgent review is also sensible when vaccination records are unavailable or the wound was not thoroughly cleaned.
