Tetanus cut symptoms: what to know

Tetanus is an uncommon but serious illness caused when bacteria from the environment enter damaged skin and produce a toxin that affects nerves and muscles. A wound may look small while the illness develops later. Early clues can include tightness in the jaw or neck, difficulty opening the mouth, and stiffness around the wound. Symptoms may progress to painful spasms in the abdomen, back, or limbs, difficulty swallowing, or breathing problems. A cut alone does not confirm tetanus, and many wounds heal without it.

Rinse the wound with clean running water, remove visible dirt gently, and cover it with a clean dressing. Do not seal a deep, puncture-like, contaminated, or animal-bite wound at home.
