What should you know about tetanus cover?

Short answer

Tetanus cover means protection provided by vaccination and, for some high-risk wounds, additional human tetanus immunoglobulin.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding tetanus cover

People often use tetanus cover to mean whether their vaccination protection is up to date after an injury. A clinician considers the type and cleanliness of the wound alongside the dates and completeness of your tetanus-containing vaccines. Protection is not decided by the object alone, such as a nail or knife.

Human tetanus immunoglobulin supplies ready-made antibodies for selected situations, while vaccination helps the immune system build longer-lasting protection. These are different products and neither should be replaced with veterinary antitoxin or a home treatment.

What to do after a wound

Rinse dirt from the wound with clean running water, cover it with a clean dressing and arrange prompt assessment if it is deep, dirty, punctured, crushed, burned or caused by a bite. Take your vaccine record or tell the clinician what you remember about previous doses.

The clinician may recommend a booster, a primary vaccination course, immunoglobulin, wound cleaning or a combination. Do not postpone care while trying to establish the exact identity of the object that caused the injury.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent care for a wound with embedded material, heavy contamination, dead tissue or ongoing bleeding. Emergency symptoms include jaw stiffness, swallowing difficulty, breathing difficulty and painful muscle spasms. These require immediate hospital attention even if the wound itself seems healed.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what your wound category is, whether your vaccine record counts as adequate cover, whether you need a booster or immunoglobulin, and how to monitor the injury while it heals.

Questions people ask

Does one recent vaccine cover every wound?

Not necessarily. The clinician considers the wound and your full vaccination history before deciding on additional treatment.

Is tetanus cover the same as antibiotics?

No. Antibiotics may have a separate role, but they do not provide the immune protection meant by tetanus cover.
