What should you know about tetanus antitoxin for horses?

Antitoxin is an antibody preparation intended for a particular animal species and veterinary situation. A horse product can have different preparation, dose, quality controls and safety considerations from medicines intended for humans. It is not a home remedy for a puncture wound, and it cannot replace a human tetanus vaccine.

Tetanus develops when Clostridium tetani bacteria enter damaged tissue and produce a toxin that affects nerves and muscles. The wound may look small, so its appearance alone does not show whether preventive treatment is needed.

Do not inject veterinary antitoxin or give it to another person. Rinse visible dirt from the wound with clean running water, avoid sealing a deep or contaminated wound yourself, and arrange prompt medical assessment. Tell the clinician when the injury happened, what caused it, whether soil or animal material entered it, and which tetanus vaccines you have received.

A clinician may clean the wound, recommend a human tetanus-containing vaccine, and consider human tetanus immunoglobulin when the injury and vaccination history call for it. Antibiotics are not a replacement for tetanus prevention.

Seek urgent medical care for a deep puncture, crush injury, bite, burn, wound containing dirt or dead tissue, or any wound that cannot be fully cleaned. Go to emergency care immediately if jaw stiffness, difficulty swallowing, painful muscle tightening, breathing difficulty or widespread spasms appear. These symptoms need hospital assessment.

Ask whether the wound needs professional cleaning, whether your vaccine record provides enough protection, whether human tetanus immunoglobulin is appropriate, and which warning symptoms should prompt emergency review.
