What should you know about testosterone gel usage?

Testosterone gel is absorbed through the skin. The application site, amount, timing and drying instructions affect exposure, and directions differ between formulations. Applying more gel does not reliably improve symptoms and may increase unwanted hormone effects.

Possible changes to report include acne, increased facial or body hair, scalp hair thinning, voice deepening, altered bleeding or mood changes. The gel can remain on skin after application and may pass to another person during close contact.

Read the label each time you use a new container. Apply the prescribed amount to clean, dry, intact skin at the instructed site, let it dry, wash your hands and cover the area if directed. Keep the product away from children and pets, and do not share towels or clothing that may carry wet gel.

If you miss an application, follow the written instructions or ask a pharmacist rather than doubling the next amount. Tell your clinician about new medicines, pregnancy possibility, breastfeeding and changes in your menstrual pattern.

Contact your clinician promptly for rapid hair growth, severe acne, voice changes, scalp hair loss, unexpected bleeding or significant mood changes. Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, facial swelling, fainting or a severe allergic reaction.

If gel gets onto another person, wash the exposed skin with soap and water and seek advice. Extra care is needed when the exposed person is a child or pregnant.
