What should you know about transdermal testosterone gel?

Short answer

Transdermal testosterone gel is absorbed through the skin, so careful application, handwashing, transfer prevention and clinician-led monitoring are essential.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Route
Through the skin into the bloodstream

Use the prescribed amount on clean, dry, intact skin
Transfer prevention
Wash hands and follow covering and contact instructions

How the transdermal route works

After gel is spread on the instructed skin, testosterone passes through the skin barrier and may enter the bloodstream. Absorption can change if the area is washed too soon, covered in an unapproved way, irritated, or exposed to another product. The exact directions depend on the formulation.

Because the hormone can circulate beyond the application site, treatment may cause acne, extra facial or body hair, scalp hair thinning, voice changes or changes in bleeding. Testosterone left on the skin can transfer to another person through close contact.

Using the gel carefully

Use the prescribed amount on the prescribed site and at the instructed time. Apply to clean, dry, intact skin, allow it to dry, wash your hands, and cover the area when advised. Avoid swimming, bathing or close skin contact until the product instructions say it is safe.

Do not rub the gel onto the breasts, genitals or damaged skin unless a clinician has specifically instructed you. Do not increase the amount for a slow response. Tell your clinician about other hormones, medicines and any chance of pregnancy before starting or continuing treatment.

Warning signs

Contact your clinician promptly if you notice a deepening voice, rapid new hair growth, severe acne, scalp hair loss, unexpected bleeding or major mood changes. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, widespread swelling, fainting or signs of a severe allergic reaction.

If gel transfers to someone else, wash the contacted skin with soap and water and seek advice, particularly if the exposed person is a child or pregnant. Keep the product label available.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which skin site and application routine apply to your formulation, how long to avoid washing or contact, what changes indicate too much exposure, and how follow-up will review symptoms and unwanted effects. Confirm what to do after a missed application.

Questions people ask

Can transdermal testosterone transfer to another person?

Yes. Residue on treated skin can transfer through contact, so wash hands, cover the area as directed and avoid contact until the product has dried as instructed.

Can I wash the application site immediately?

Follow the specific product instructions. Washing too soon may reduce absorption, so ask your clinician or pharmacist if the directions are unclear.
