Short answer

A TFCC tear is assessed through wrist history, targeted examination, and imaging chosen to clarify the injury.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical location
Little-finger side of the wrist
Testing focus
Tenderness, rotation, grip, motion, and stability

How testing works

The TFCC supports the little-finger side of the wrist and helps stabilize the joint during rotation and gripping. A clinician asks how the pain began, checks tenderness, grip, wrist motion, and stability, and may use specific loading or rotation manoeuvres. These tests can suggest irritation but cannot always show the exact tear. X-rays may look for bone injury or alignment changes, while MRI can show soft tissues when the result would affect treatment. Wrist pain can have several causes, so the examination matters.

What to do while it is assessed

Reduce gripping, twisting, and weight-bearing through the affected hand. A splint may limit painful movement for a period chosen by your clinician. Keep nearby fingers moving gently unless told otherwise, and avoid testing the painful manoeuvre repeatedly. Once the diagnosis and irritability are clearer, physiotherapy may restore motion, strength, and control. A cortisone injection is sometimes discussed for selected wrist pain, but it does not replace diagnosis or repair every type of tear.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt assessment after a fall, twist, or impact if the wrist is very swollen, visibly deformed, weak, or difficult to move. Seek urgent help for a cold or blue hand, new numbness, severe worsening pain, or an open injury. If pain on the little-finger side persists or clicking interferes with daily tasks, book a musculoskeletal review.

Questions for your doctor

Which structures could explain my symptoms? Do I need an X-ray or MRI? How long should I use a splint? When can I start physiotherapy, and what activities should I pause?

Questions people ask

Can a physical examination confirm a TFCC tear?

It can identify patterns that raise suspicion, but imaging may be needed to clarify soft-tissue damage.

Is clicking enough to prove a tear?

No. Clicking can occur for different reasons and should be interpreted with pain, injury history, and examination findings.
