Tension headache with dizziness: what to know

Dizziness may mean light-headedness, unsteadiness, or a spinning sensation; these experiences are not interchangeable. Tension-type headache can occur with neck and scalp muscle tightness, while dizziness may also relate to dehydration, missed meals, inner-ear problems, medication effects, visual strain or blood pressure changes. The combination does not identify one diagnosis by itself. Describe whether symptoms begin when standing, turning your head, walking, or during the headache.

Sit or lie down when dizziness starts and rise slowly. Avoid driving, climbing or operating machinery until you feel steady. Drink water and have a regular meal if you have missed one, unless a clinician has given you different fluid or diet advice. Reduce screen strain, loosen a clenched jaw and rest in a calm environment. Write down the sensation, onset, duration, position, hearing changes, nausea, medicines and recent illness. This information can help a GP decide whether your ears, vision, nerves or general health need checking.

Arrange prompt medical advice when dizziness is new, keeps returning, affects walking, follows a medicine change, or occurs with hearing symptoms. Seek emergency help for facial drooping, one-sided weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, severe imbalance, fainting, confusion, a sudden severe headache, chest pain, or a new vision loss. Do not drive yourself if these symptoms are present.
