Tension headache behind one eye: what to know

A tension-type headache can cause a steady, pressing ache around the forehead, temples, or eye area. Muscle tension around the scalp, face, neck, and jaw may make the discomfort feel deeper than it is. However, pain behind one eye has a wider range of possible explanations, including migraine, an eye condition, sinus symptoms, or a cluster-type headache. The pattern matters: tearing, a red eye, eyelid drooping, restlessness, nausea, light sensitivity, or pain with eye movement should not be assumed to be simple tension.

Rest your eyes from close screens, adjust harsh lighting, and relax your jaw rather than clenching your teeth. Gentle shoulder and neck movement may help if those areas feel tight. Do not press or massage the eyeball. Follow package directions if taking a usual pain reliever, and ask a pharmacist about interactions or safety if you take regular medicines or have a chronic condition. Note which eye is affected, how quickly pain builds, how long it lasts, and whether the eye looks or sees differently.
