What should you know about TENS unit wires?

Lead wires form the connection between the TENS controller and its electrode pads. Each end must be seated in the correct socket or connector. A loose, bent, split, or exposed wire can interrupt stimulation or make it feel uneven. The wire itself does not determine pad placement; placement should follow the device instructions or a physiotherapist's guidance for the painful area.

Switch the unit off before attaching, moving, or removing a lead. Check the insulation and connectors for damage, then connect without forcing the plug. Keep wires untangled and away from hot surfaces, sharp edges, and areas where they can be pulled. Do not tape over exposed metal, splice a damaged lead, or use a replacement that is not compatible. Store the wires loosely rather than wrapping them tightly around the controller.

Stop using the unit if a wire becomes hot, sparks, smells unusual, or causes sudden painful shocks. Skin burning, blistering, dizziness, chest discomfort, or an irregular heartbeat sensation also warrants stopping. Seek medical assessment for new weakness, spreading numbness, or severe pain. A clinician or supplier can help distinguish a cable problem from poor pad contact or an unsuitable setting.

Ask how your leads should connect, whether a replacement cable is compatible, and how to position the wires so movement does not pull on the pads.
