What should you know about TENS unit use?

Short answer
TENS unit use involves placing connected electrodes on clean skin and starting gentle stimulation within your comfort.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How TENS is used
A TENS unit sends mild electrical pulses through electrode pads. The sensation may feel like tingling, tapping, or rhythmic pulsing. It should not feel sharply painful or like a burning current. TENS may temporarily change how pain signals are experienced, but it does not identify or correct the underlying cause of pain. Placement matters: pads should surround or sit near the painful area without crossing the front of the neck, head, or broken skin.
A careful session
Read the device instructions, check the pads and wires, and sit or lie in a stable position. Attach pads before switching stimulation on, then begin at a low intensity and increase only while the feeling remains comfortable. Keep the unit off while moving pads. Avoid using it in water, while driving, or while sleeping unless a clinician has specifically advised this. Remove pads after switching off and inspect the skin.
When to stop
Stop immediately for burning, a rash, blistering, sudden worsening pain, dizziness, or an unusual heartbeat sensation. Arrange medical assessment for new weakness, spreading numbness, loss of balance, or pain after a significant injury. If repeated sessions do not help or pain is changing, discuss the diagnosis and treatment plan with a clinician rather than simply increasing stimulation.
Questions for your doctor
Ask where to place the pads for your pain, which settings are appropriate, and whether TENS is suitable alongside your medicines or implanted device.
