What should you know about TENS unit supplies?

Electrode pads sit on intact skin and deliver the electrical signal. Lead wires connect the pads to the control unit, which lets you select a programme and adjust intensity. Some devices use replaceable batteries or a rechargeable power source. Pads are consumable: their adhesive and conductive surface can wear out, especially when skin is oily, damp, or not cleaned before use. Supplies from a different device may not fit or may not provide the intended connection, so check compatibility with the device instructions.

Use pads and wires made for your device or confirmed by the manufacturer. Inspect wires for splits, exposed metal, loose connectors, or unusual warmth before each session. Keep pads covered between uses and place them on clean, dry skin. Do not trim pads, join wires, or use damaged parts. Replace a pad when it no longer stays attached or causes persistent stinging. Remove pads gently rather than pulling the wire.

Stop the session if you develop burning, blistering, marked redness, worsening pain, dizziness, or an irregular heartbeat sensation. Seek prompt medical advice for a skin injury, or if pain is accompanied by new weakness, loss of sensation, or difficulty controlling a limb. A clinician or physiotherapist can also check the equipment if stimulation feels uneven or the device behaves unexpectedly.
