What should you know about TENS unit sticky pads?

The adhesive surface holds the electrode against the skin so electrical pulses can pass evenly from the TENS unit. A pad that is lifting, dry, dirty, or wrinkled may give uneven stimulation and can irritate the skin. Sticky pads are usually intended for repeated personal use, but their lifespan depends on the product and how they are handled.

Apply them only to clean, dry, intact skin. Keep them away from wounds, rashes, infection, numb areas, the front of the neck, the head, and across the chest. Do not apply lotion or oil immediately beforehand.

Wash and dry the skin, then smooth each pad onto the area recommended by the instructions. Turn the unit off before removal and lift the pad gently from its edge. Put the protective liner back immediately and store the pads in their sealed container or pouch, away from heat and dust.

Do not share pads, add household glue, or use a pad that has changed shape or texture. Replace it when it will not stay attached, feels dry, causes irritation, or produces uncomfortable stimulation. If adhesive sensitivity continues, ask a clinician about another electrode option.

Stop using the pads for blistering, persistent redness, swelling, burning, or a sharp electrical feeling. Seek urgent help for sudden weakness, severe numbness, severe injury-related pain, chest symptoms, fainting, or breathing difficulty. Arrange an assessment if the underlying pain is worsening, persistent, or accompanied by fever.

Ask how often your pads should be replaced, whether the adhesive suits your skin, and where to place them for your particular pain. Mention an implanted electrical device, reduced sensation, pregnancy, seizures, recent surgery, or previous adhesive reactions before starting.
