What should you know about TENS unit pads?

Short answer

TENS unit pads are adhesive electrodes that carry gentle electrical pulses to the skin, and they need clean skin, good contact, and regular inspection.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Purpose
Carries pulses between the device and skin
Application
Clean, dry, intact skin gives better contact
Replacement
Change pads when adhesion or comfort declines

What the pads do

The pads connect the TENS device to your skin. Their conductive surface spreads the pulse over the contact area, while the device controls the strength and pattern. A comfortable tingling is expected; a sharp, hot, or stinging feeling suggests that the setting, contact, or position needs attention.

Pads should sit on intact skin near the painful area, not over an open wound, infected skin, irritated rash, or numb patch. They should not be placed on the front of the neck, head, or across the chest. Exact placement depends on the body area and the device instructions.

Using and caring for pads

Clean and dry the skin before application, without lotion or oil. Press the pad down smoothly so the whole surface contacts the skin, then connect the leads as directed. After use, switch off the unit before removing the pads. Return reusable pads to their protective liner, seal them as instructed, and keep them cool and clean.

Replace a pad when it no longer sticks evenly, feels dry, causes repeated irritation, or gives inconsistent stimulation. Do not share pads. If a pad lifts during use, turn the unit off before repositioning it. Ask a clinician about alternatives if adhesive causes a reaction.

When to seek care

Stop using the pads and seek advice for blistering, persistent redness, swelling, burning, or a painful electrical sensation. Seek urgent care for new weakness, major numbness, severe pain after injury, or symptoms such as chest discomfort or fainting. A clinician should review pain that is worsening or not settling with the recommended plan.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which pad size and electrode positions suit your pain, how often to replace the pads, and how to respond to skin irritation. Tell the clinician about an implanted electrical device, reduced sensation, pregnancy, seizures, recent surgery, or allergies before using TENS.

Questions people ask

Can I wash TENS pads?

Do not wash them unless the manufacturer specifically permits it; follow the supplied cleaning and storage instructions.

Why do TENS pads stop sticking?

Skin oils, lotions, dust, repeated use, and drying can reduce adhesion. Clean dry skin and correct storage may help.
