What should you know about using a TENS unit on an arm?

Short answer
A TENS unit on an arm can ease some pain sensations when pads are placed on healthy skin around the affected area.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Placement
- Around the painful area on intact skin
- Avoid
- Chest, front of neck, broken or numb skin
- Stop for
- Burning, rash, new numbness, or worse pain
How arm stimulation works
Electrical pulses delivered through the skin can change how pain signals are felt while the unit is running. TENS does not repair a fracture, tendon injury, infection, or nerve problem, so the reason for arm pain still matters. Do not place pads across the chest, over the front of the neck, on broken skin, or on areas with reduced feeling. Keep the unit off while applying or moving electrodes.
Making placement safer
Wash and dry the skin, then place electrodes around the painful region with space between them, following the device instructions. Avoid joints if movement will pull the pads, and check the skin after removal. Use a low, comfortable setting first. If arm pain follows a new injury, allow a clinician to check the injury before relying on stimulation; swelling, splinting, or numbness can change what is safe.
When to seek care
Get urgent care for arm pain with chest pressure, breathlessness, sweating, sudden weakness, facial drooping, or trouble speaking. Prompt assessment is also needed after a serious injury, or when the arm is deformed, cold, pale, markedly swollen, or losing strength. Stop TENS if it causes burning, a rash, increased numbness, or worsening pain.
Questions for your doctor
Ask where pads belong for your specific pain, whether movement or a brace affects placement, and whether numbness or circulation changes make TENS unsuitable. Discuss the diagnosis and the exercises or treatment that should accompany pain relief.

Questions people ask
Can TENS be used on arm muscles?
It may be appropriate for some arm pain, but placement depends on the cause and the condition of the skin and nerves.
Can I use TENS over a cut?
No. Wait until the skin is healed and ask for guidance if the area is numb, infected, or covered by a dressing.
