What should you know about a TENS unit machine?

The device sends controlled pulses into nerves near the painful area. Many people feel tingling, tapping, or rhythmic buzzing rather than heat. The sensation should be noticeable but comfortable; it should not feel like sharp pain or burning. TENS may make symptoms easier to tolerate during movement, rest, or rehabilitation, but it does not identify or correct the cause of pain.

Read the device instructions and check the skin before applying the pads. Place clean electrodes around, rather than directly over, the painful region and keep them away from broken, irritated, or numb skin. Start with a low setting and increase it gradually only while the sensation remains comfortable. Turn the unit off before moving pads, and remove them after use. A physiotherapist can help match placement and settings to your symptoms.

Stop using the unit if it causes a rash, blistering, worsening pain, dizziness, or an unusual sensation. Seek prompt medical assessment for new weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe pain after an injury, or a limb that becomes cold or changes colour. Pain that persists, spreads, or repeatedly returns deserves an examination rather than repeated self-treatment.

Ask whether TENS fits the suspected cause of your pain, where the electrodes should go, which settings are reasonable, and what signs mean you should stop. Mention implanted electrical devices, pregnancy, reduced sensation, skin problems, and all treatments you are using.
