What should you know about TENS units for a stiff neck?

Short answer
A TENS unit may ease discomfort linked with a stiff neck for a short time, but electrodes should not be placed on the front or sides of the neck and severe or unusual symptoms need assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the sensation means
TENS uses mild electrical impulses delivered through skin pads to influence pain processing. It may make tight neck muscles feel more comfortable while you move, but it does not identify whether stiffness comes from posture, muscle strain, a joint problem, nerve irritation, or another cause.
Neck stiffness can improve with gentle movement and regular changes of position. Avoid forcing a stretch or using the device to push through worsening pain. A clinician can examine strength, sensation, movement, and reflexes when the pattern is unclear.
Safer practical steps
Follow the device instructions and start at a low, comfortable intensity. A trained clinician should show you whether pads can be placed over the upper shoulder or upper back muscles; never put them on the front or sides of the neck, across the head, or over irritated skin. Do not use TENS while driving, sleeping, bathing, or using machinery.
Try slow neck turns within a comfortable range, warmth if it suits you, and a supported sitting position. Stop the device if you develop burning, a rash, dizziness, headache, or increased pain. Ask before use if you have an implanted electrical device, reduced sensation, or a condition that affects skin feeling.
Warning signs
Seek urgent care after a major injury, or if stiffness comes with new arm or leg weakness, loss of coordination, numbness spreading down a limb, severe headache, fever, confusion, or difficulty speaking or swallowing. Medical review is also sensible when pain keeps worsening or prevents ordinary movement. These symptoms should not be masked with TENS.
Useful questions
Ask what may be causing your stiffness, where pads could safely go, whether a different treatment is more suitable, and which movements are appropriate. Clarify how to protect your skin and which changes in strength, sensation, headache, or balance should lead you to stop home treatment.

Questions people ask
Can I put TENS pads on my neck?
Do not place pads on the front or sides of the neck. A clinician can advise whether the upper shoulder or back is appropriate.
Can TENS fix the cause of a stiff neck?
No. It may alter pain signals, but examination and targeted care are needed to address the cause.
