What should you know about TENS unit for labor?

TENS sends mild electrical pulses through adhesive pads placed on the skin. The sensation can feel like tingling or tapping, and the intensity can usually be adjusted. During labor, some people use it for back discomfort or around contractions while staying mobile and engaged with breathing and position changes. It is a comfort measure rather than a way to stop contractions or treat the cause of labor pain.

Discuss the device with your midwife or obstetric team before labor, especially if you have a pacemaker, an implanted electrical device, reduced skin sensation, or irritated skin. Follow the device instructions for pad placement; do not place pads across the front of the neck, over the head, or across the chest. Keep the controller accessible so you can change settings or stop stimulation. Remove the pads before entering a birthing pool or shower, and ask the maternity team when it should be removed for monitoring or another procedure.

Seek maternity advice promptly for heavy bleeding, severe or constant abdominal pain, fainting, trouble breathing, reduced fetal movement, or fluid loss that concerns you. Stop the TENS unit if it causes burning, a rash, worsening pain, dizziness, or an uncomfortable sensation that does not settle after lowering the intensity. Do not use it to delay assessment when labor symptoms or pregnancy concerns need attention.

Ask where the pads may be placed for your labor, whether your planned monitoring changes its use, and when the device must be removed. You can also ask which pain-relief choices remain available if TENS does not provide enough comfort.
