TENS unit for home use: what to know

Short answer
Home TENS use can support short-term pain relief when the device and electrode placement are suitable for your symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What home TENS does
A TENS unit delivers mild electrical impulses through pads placed on the skin. The tingling may change how pain signals are experienced, but it does not diagnose or repair the cause of pain. Results differ between people and body areas. A clinician or physiotherapist can help decide whether it fits your condition and demonstrate placement before you use it alone.
A careful home routine
Check the pads, wires, and skin before each session. Place pads on clean, dry, intact skin around the painful area, following the device instructions or your clinician’s plan. Start with a low setting and increase to a strong, comfortable tingling; it should not hurt or cause forceful muscle contractions. Remove pads before bathing, swimming, sleeping, or driving. Turn the unit off before moving electrodes and stop if you notice burning, rash, dizziness, or worsening pain.
When home use is not enough
Get medical advice for pain that is new, severe, unexplained, or steadily worsening. Seek urgent care for chest pain, sudden weakness, new loss of bladder or bowel control, severe shortness of breath, or a major injury. Discuss TENS before use if you have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, reduced sensation, epilepsy, pregnancy, or a skin condition near the planned pads.
Before you start
Ask whether TENS is appropriate for your diagnosis, where each pad should go, how long a session should last, and how to clean and store the equipment. Confirm when to stop using it and which symptoms need a review.

Use the placement shown by the device guidance or a clinician, on intact skin around—not over—the painful area.
