TENS unit for gout: what to know

Gout is an inflammatory arthritis in which urate crystals can trigger intense pain, swelling, warmth, and tenderness in a joint. TENS changes sensory input through skin electrodes, so it may make pain feel less prominent for some people. It cannot dissolve crystals, lower urate, or replace treatment chosen for the flare. A very tender or swollen joint may also make pad placement uncomfortable.

Rest the joint, elevate the limb, and keep pressure off it during a flare. Use prescribed gout medicine exactly as directed and ask a clinician before adding an over-the-counter pain medicine, especially if you have kidney, stomach, heart, or blood-pressure problems. Do not place electrodes over broken, infected, or highly inflamed skin. After the flare, discuss long-term prevention if attacks recur.

Seek urgent assessment for a first episode of a hot, swollen joint, fever, feeling very unwell, or rapidly worsening pain because infection can resemble gout. Obtain prompt advice if treatment is not helping, several joints become affected, or you cannot safely walk. A clinician may need to examine the joint and confirm the diagnosis.
