TENS unit for cramps: what to know

Short answer
A TENS unit may lessen the discomfort of some cramps, but it does not correct every cause of muscle cramping.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why cramps happen
A cramp is a sudden, involuntary tightening of a muscle. It can occur after exertion, prolonged positioning, dehydration, or changes affecting nerves, muscles, or medicines. TENS applies a mild electrical current through adhesive pads and may alter pain signalling or make a tight muscle feel more comfortable. It is not a substitute for finding the cause when cramps are frequent, severe, or new.
What you can try
During a cramp, stop the provoking activity and gently stretch the affected muscle if you can do so safely. A light massage and comfortable warmth may help. If a clinician has recommended TENS, place pads around—not directly over—the painful muscle, use a comfortable tingling level, and check the skin afterward. Never use it on damaged skin, while driving, in water, or where you cannot feel the current properly. Follow the device instructions.
When cramps need attention
Seek prompt care if a cramp comes with swelling, a cold or discoloured limb, marked weakness, chest symptoms, or a new neurological change. Book an assessment when cramps keep returning, affect sleep, follow a new medicine, or occur with persistent numbness or walking difficulty. Sudden severe pain with an injured muscle may need examination.
Useful questions
Ask what may be triggering your cramps, whether your medicines or health conditions contribute, how to stretch the affected muscle, and whether TENS is suitable for its location. Ask which symptoms would change the urgency of review.

Questions people ask
Will TENS stop a cramp immediately?
Not necessarily. It may change discomfort, but gentle stretching and addressing the trigger may be more useful during an active cramp.
Can TENS prevent cramps?
It is not a universal prevention method. Recurrent cramps deserve an assessment of contributing factors.
