Short answer

A TENS unit may temporarily ease pain from a bulging disc, but it does not move the disc back or treat nerve compression.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How this relates to a bulging disc

A bulging disc can irritate nearby tissues or a spinal nerve, causing back pain, buttock pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness. TENS sends mild electrical impulses through skin electrodes. Some people find that the sensation changes how pain signals are noticed, especially during a painful flare. Relief varies and may last only while the unit is running or for a short time afterward. It is a comfort measure, not a way to heal the disc.

Using it safely

Ask a physiotherapist to show you electrode placement for your exact pain pattern. Use intact skin near the painful area, begin with a gentle setting, and increase only to a strong but comfortable tingling. Keep moving within comfortable limits and follow the rehabilitation plan you were given. Do not place electrodes over the front of the neck, head, broken skin, or directly across the chest. Stop if the skin burns, pain sharply worsens, or new weakness appears.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical care for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the genitals or inner thighs, rapidly worsening leg weakness, or severe symptoms after a significant injury. Arrange a clinical assessment for persistent pain, progressive numbness, fever, unexplained weight loss, or pain that repeatedly wakes you. A clinician can distinguish disc-related nerve symptoms from other causes and adjust treatment.

Questions for your doctor or physiotherapist

Ask whether your symptoms suggest nerve irritation, where electrodes should sit, which activities are suitable while you recover, and what changes should prompt a review. Also ask whether a TENS unit fits alongside exercise, medication, or other treatment you are considering.

Questions people ask

Can TENS cure a bulging disc?

No. It may reduce the feeling of pain for a time, but it does not repair the disc or remove pressure from a nerve.

Can I use TENS with leg tingling?

Discuss it with a clinician first, particularly if tingling is new, spreading, or accompanied by weakness.
