What should you know about a TENS machine for a pulled muscle?

Short answer
A TENS machine may reduce discomfort from a pulled muscle for a while, but it does not heal torn muscle fibres or replace graded recovery.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- TENS role
- May make pain more manageable
- Tissue effect
- Does not repair injured fibres
- Progress marker
- Gradual return of movement and strength
What happens with a pulled muscle
A pulled muscle, also called a muscle strain, can involve overstretched or injured fibres. TENS works at the skin and nerves, so any benefit is about pain signalling rather than tissue repair. It may make gentle movement easier, but masking pain can lead to doing too much too soon. Calf pain, thigh pain, or back muscle spasm may have causes other than a strain.
A safer recovery approach
Use TENS only on intact skin and keep pads away from the injured area if swelling or bruising makes placement uncomfortable. Choose a mild, tolerable setting and follow the device directions. During the early phase, protect the area from activities that clearly worsen pain; then gradually restore movement and strength as symptoms settle. Do not use TENS to push through sharp pain, increasing swelling, or loss of function.
When to seek care
Arrange assessment after a forceful injury, a popping sensation, marked bruising, a visible dent, or difficulty walking or using the limb. Seek urgent help for severe swelling, a cold or pale limb, new weakness, numbness, or calf pain with breathlessness or chest pain. Ongoing pain that does not steadily improve also needs review.
Questions to ask
How severe is the strain, and what activity is safe today? Where can I place TENS pads? When should I begin strengthening? What symptoms would suggest a tendon, nerve, or circulation problem instead?

Questions people ask
Can TENS heal a pulled muscle?
No. Healing depends on time, suitable loading, and treatment matched to the injury; TENS only targets symptom perception.
Should I use TENS immediately after a strain?
Ask a clinician if swelling, bruising, or uncertain diagnosis makes pad placement or activity unclear.
