TENS for Cellulite: What to Know

Cellulite is a skin texture pattern caused by the interaction of fat compartments, fibrous connective bands, and skin support. TENS, or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, is mainly used to deliver small electrical impulses through the skin for sensory comfort or muscle activation. That mechanism is different from treating the bands or changing the skin's structure.

Results depend on the treatment selected, the depth of dimpling, skin laxity, and the area treated. Radiofrequency skin tightening and RF microneedling use energy and controlled skin injury to target tissue remodeling, while subcision mechanically releases selected tethering bands. Carboxytherapy uses injected carbon dioxide and is not the same as TENS.

Clarify whether a device being offered is truly TENS or another energy-based procedure, and ask what tissue it targets. A qualified clinician should examine the dimpling, discuss realistic improvement rather than total removal, and explain discomfort, bruising, swelling, pigment change, and aftercare. Do not place electrical pads over broken, infected, or numb skin, and disclose implanted electrical devices, pregnancy, skin conditions, and medicines before treatment.

Cellulite itself is usually a cosmetic concern, but seek medical assessment for a new painful, hot, red, rapidly swelling, or one-sided area rather than assuming it is cellulite. After any procedure, contact the provider for worsening pain, spreading redness, blistering, unusual weakness, or swelling that does not settle.
