Temporary Plaster Cast: What to Know

Plaster of Paris can be shaped closely around the limb and may be used as an initial splint or cast. In the early period after a fracture, swelling can increase, so the cast may be split, open along one side, or fitted with extra space. Once the examination shows that swelling is controlled and the bones remain supported, the team may replace it with a more definitive cast or discuss another option.

Keep the plaster clean and dry; cover it securely for bathing without sealing a wet cover against the skin for long periods. Rest and elevate the limb when swelling is noticeable. Move exposed fingers or toes gently if permitted, checking that sensation and colour remain normal. Never push items inside, cut the plaster, or alter its padding. Avoid placing weight on it unless the treating team has specifically allowed that activity.

Get prompt medical advice for worsening pain, burning, pressure, numbness, tingling, marked swelling, or fingers or toes that become cold or change colour. A cracked, soaked, soft, foul-smelling, or rubbing cast should be checked. Emergency assessment is appropriate for severe new deformity, uncontrolled bleeding, or an inability to move the exposed digits.

Ask when the plaster will be reviewed, how to sleep and wash safely, whether you need a sling or crutches, and which activities are restricted. Ask how you will know the cast is too tight and whether physiotherapy will be part of recovery.
