What should you know about tear trough fat transfer?

Fat transfer, also called facial fat grafting or lipofilling, involves collecting fat from another body area, processing it, and placing small amounts into a targeted area. Beneath the eye, the aim is to soften a depression and improve the transition between the lower eyelid and cheek. It does not remove loose skin or treat every cause of dark colour.

The result can be affected by the amount placed, the quality of the tissue, facial movement, and how the transferred fat heals. Swelling and bruising can temporarily make the area look uneven. The eye region needs especially careful planning because excess volume may create heaviness or an irregular contour.

A consultation should review your goals, previous procedures, eyelid shape, cheek volume, skin laxity, medical conditions, medicines, and the area from which fat may be collected. Your clinician should explain the expected healing process, possible asymmetry, infection, contour changes, and the plan if the result needs adjustment.

Dermal fillers are a non-surgical alternative for selected hollows, while fat transfer uses tissue collected from your own body. Lip fillers are a separate treatment and do not treat the tear trough. Choose an appropriately trained medical professional who regularly evaluates the eye area.

Contact the treating team for worsening pain, increasing redness, warmth, drainage, fever, marked asymmetry, or swelling that is not following the expected course. Seek urgent care for vision change, severe eye pain, double vision, or rapidly increasing swelling. Do not massage or press the area unless your treating clinician has specifically advised it.

Ask: Is my concern a hollow that fat transfer can address? Where will the fat be collected? How will you reduce the risk of overcorrection or contour irregularity? What aftercare applies to the donor and eye areas, and what would make you want to review me sooner?
