Tea Tree Oil for KP: What to Know

Keratosis pilaris causes small, rough follicular bumps, often on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks. It is different from a boil, which is typically a tender, inflamed lump related to infection. Tea tree oil may cause dryness, burning, or an allergic rash and may make roughness harder to judge. A painful, hot, enlarging lump should not be assumed to be KP.

Stop tea tree oil if the skin burns, peels, swells, or becomes more inflamed. Use a gentle cleanser and moisturiser, and avoid picking or aggressive scrubbing. A clinician can distinguish keratosis pilaris from boils, folliculitis, or another skin lump and suggest a suitable routine. Do not squeeze a painful lump; if it is an abscess, abscess drainage may be needed rather than an oil.

Seek prompt medical assessment for a lump that is rapidly enlarging, very painful, hot, draining pus, or surrounded by spreading redness. Fever, chills, or feeling unwell raises concern for a skin infection. Get urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or widespread hives after tea tree oil.
