What should you know about TDF for hepatitis B?

Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, often shortened to TDF, lowers the amount of hepatitis B virus in the body. It may reduce ongoing inflammation in the liver, but it does not remove the virus from every person or replace follow-up care. Hepatitis B can be quiet while liver changes continue, so symptoms alone cannot show whether treatment is working.

A clinician may review liver blood tests, kidney function, medicines, and other health conditions before and during treatment. Dark urine or unusual fatigue can have several causes and should be considered alongside other findings.

Take TDF exactly as prescribed and try to take it at a consistent time. Do not stop it suddenly without medical advice, because hepatitis B activity can increase after treatment is stopped. Tell the prescriber about kidney problems, bone concerns, pregnancy, and every medicine or supplement you use.

Keep scheduled blood tests even when you feel well. Avoid sharing razors or toothbrushes, cover open cuts, and ask household or sexual contacts about vaccination. A liver function test can help clinicians assess inflammation and treatment response.

Contact your treating clinician promptly if you miss several doses, cannot keep the medicine down, develop swelling, much less urine, severe weakness, or new bone pain. Seek urgent help for yellow skin or eyes, confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, or severe abdominal swelling.
