Is Tdap the same as a tetanus shot?

Tdap combines three protections: tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. A product used for later booster protection may contain tetanus and diphtheria without the pertussis component, while another product may be selected for a particular age or situation. The correct option depends on your vaccination history and the reason you are being assessed. A clinician can identify the product from its name and your record.

If you have been advised to get a tetanus shot, do not choose a product from the name alone. Bring your immunisation record, explain whether the advice followed an injury, and mention pregnancy, allergies or immune-system treatment. Clean any wound promptly with running water and seek medical advice when the wound is deep, dirty or caused by a bite. The clinician will decide whether vaccination or other care is appropriate.

Get urgent care for breathing difficulty, throat or facial swelling, extensive hives, collapse or marked dizziness after an injection. After an injury, seek prompt assessment for a puncture wound, tissue damage, embedded material or uncertain vaccination history. Do not wait for stiffness or spasms to develop before asking about prevention.

Ask which vaccine is being offered, which illnesses it covers, whether it replaces a planned booster, and what follow-up is needed after your injury or dose.
