Is Tdap the same as a tetanus vaccine?

The letters refer to three illnesses: tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. Tetanus can cause painful muscle stiffness and jaw tightening after bacteria enter a wound. Diphtheria can affect the throat and breathing. Pertussis causes prolonged coughing and can be especially serious for babies. Tdap uses inactivated components to train the immune system; it does not give you these infections.

Check your vaccination record and discuss the appropriate product and timing with a clinician. The choice can depend on your age, previous doses, pregnancy, wound history and local recommendations. After an injection, soreness, tiredness or a mild fever can occur for a short time. Keep the record of the dose so future boosters can be planned.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, fainting or severe weakness after vaccination. For a wound, obtain prompt medical advice if it is deep, contaminated, caused by a puncture or bite, or if your vaccination history is uncertain; wound care and additional protection may be needed.
