What should you know about the TCA peel cross method?

Short answer

The TCA cross method is a focused chemical treatment for selected small textural defects and should be performed only after a clinician confirms the target.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Application
Placed into selected small depressions rather than spread broadly
Early appearance
Treated spots may darken, redden, crust, or look more visible
Essential safeguard
Accurate diagnosis and precise clinician application

How the cross method differs

In the cross method, a concentrated TCA solution is placed into individual small depressions rather than spread broadly over an entire area. The aim is to trigger healing and collagen remodelling within the defect. The treated spots can temporarily look darker, redder, crusted, or more obvious before they soften.

It is not the same as a general facial peel. Suitability depends on the type, depth, and activity of the mark. [Acne](/conditions/acne/), [Comedonal Acne](/conditions/comedonal-acne/), and [Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation](/conditions/post-inflammatory-hyperpigmentation/) may need separate treatment plans.

Preparing for focused treatment

Have the area examined and show the clinician how the texture changes with lighting or facial movement. Mention active breakouts, eczema, cold sores, previous dark marks, raised scars, medicines, and recent sun exposure. Do not apply concentrated TCA yourself; a small placement error can injure surrounding skin.

Follow the aftercare plan: cleanse gently, use the recommended ointment, leave crusts alone, and avoid acids, retinoids, picking, and heavy friction until instructed. Sun protection is especially useful because inflammation can leave a darker mark. Ask whether [Glycolic Acid](/materials/glycolic-acid/) or another approach is more appropriate for the wider area.

When to seek care

Contact the provider if pain is worsening rather than easing, redness spreads, swelling becomes marked, or drainage, fever, or extensive blistering develops. Arrange review for persistent colour change, a new raised scar, or a depression that appears deeper after healing. Urgent help is needed for eye involvement or facial swelling affecting breathing.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the defect is suitable for TCA cross, how many spots will be treated in one visit, what changes are expected during healing, and what alternatives exist. Ask how the plan will reduce the chance of a dark mark or textural change.

Questions people ask

Is TCA cross the same as a full chemical peel?

No. TCA cross targets individual small defects, while a full peel is spread across a wider skin area.

Can I perform the cross method at home?

No. Concentrated TCA can burn nearby skin, and an incorrect target may worsen texture or pigmentation.
