Screening may use a blood test, such as an interferon-gamma release assay, or a skin test that is read at a planned return visit. These tests detect how your immune system reacts to TB-related material. They do not tell you reliably when infection happened, whether it is latent or active, or where it is in the body. Results are interpreted alongside symptoms, previous testing, immune health, exposure history and other findings.

Follow the instructions for the test you were offered. A skin test needs its reading within the requested appointment window; a blood test requires the sample to be processed by the testing service. If the result is positive, arrange a clinical review. The clinician may check for symptoms and recommend a chest X-ray or other assessment before deciding whether treatment is needed. Bring records of earlier TB tests and vaccination if available.

Seek prompt medical advice for a persistent cough, coughing blood, fever, night sweats, chest pain, unexplained weight loss or marked fatigue after a positive result. Urgent care is appropriate for severe breathlessness, bluish lips, fainting or confusion. A symptom can have many causes, but these findings should not wait for a routine screening discussion.

Ask which test was used, how the result was interpreted, whether you need a chest X-ray, and how active TB will be assessed. Also ask whether a previous test or TB vaccination changes the interpretation and what follow-up is planned.
