Polymorphic light eruption, also called sun allergy, can cause an itchy rash on sun-exposed skin, while an ink-specific reaction may remain concentrated in the tattoo. Infection, contact dermatitis, heat rash, and other skin conditions can look similar, so the pattern and timing matter more than the tattoo alone.

Move out of direct sun, cover the area with clothing, and use broad-spectrum sunscreen on intact skin as advised by a clinician. Do not scratch or apply a new fragranced product over the rash. Note which ink colours are affected, how soon symptoms begin after exposure, and whether the reaction returns.
