How tamoxifen works

Oestrogen can attach to receptors on certain cells and send instructions that encourage growth. Tamoxifen occupies those receptors in breast tissue, so the signal may be blocked or weakened. Its action is tissue-selective: it can behave differently in the uterus, bones, and other areas. This mechanism explains why tamoxifen is useful for some hormone-sensitive breast cancers and for risk reduction in selected people, while also explaining why it can cause effects outside the breast.

Take the medicine according to your prescription, even when you cannot feel its receptor-level action. Keep the oncology team informed about missed doses, new medicines, and supplements. Ask before using products marketed for hormones, menopause, fertility, or bodybuilding. Write down changes in bleeding, vision, mood, or breast tissue so the team can assess timing and severity. Follow the monitoring plan made for your diagnosis.

Seek prompt advice for unexpected vaginal bleeding, new pelvic pain, a new breast lump, or changes in vision. Emergency assessment is appropriate for sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing, coughing blood, fainting, or one-sided leg swelling. A side effect cannot be confirmed from timing alone, so give the clinician a complete account of what happened and when.
