Tamoxifen as hormone therapy

Some breast cancer cells use oestrogen signals to receive growth messages. Tamoxifen binds to oestrogen receptors in breast tissue and can reduce that message, although its effects differ between body tissues. This is why it is called a selective oestrogen-receptor medicine. It may be used after cancer treatment, for active hormone-sensitive disease, or for risk reduction in carefully selected people. The decision depends on diagnosis, menopausal status, other health factors, and medicines already being taken.

Take tamoxifen exactly as prescribed and keep a record of troublesome symptoms such as hot flushes, mood changes, vaginal symptoms, or sexual changes. Tell the oncology team about all medicines and supplements before adding anything for these effects. Some products can interfere with tamoxifen processing. Continue recommended follow-up, because the purpose of treatment is assessed through your overall care plan rather than by how you feel on a particular day.

Report unexpected vaginal bleeding, persistent pelvic discomfort, vision changes, or a new breast symptom to your clinician. Get urgent help for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing blood, severe weakness, or painful one-sided leg swelling. Do not assume a new symptom is a hormone effect; the care team can separate common treatment effects from problems requiring rapid assessment.
