Although oestrogen levels differ between people, men can also have cancers whose growth is influenced by oestrogen receptors. Tamoxifen occupies these receptors and reduces the signal reaching sensitive cancer cells. The prescription may follow tumour testing, previous treatment, or a plan to reduce risk in a particular situation. It is not a testosterone supplement and it is not suitable for every cause of low testosterone or every cancer.

Possible effects include hot flushes, sweating, changes in mood or sexual function, tiredness, nausea, and changes in vision. These effects are not proof that the medicine is working or failing. Your oncology team can review symptoms and check whether another medicine, illness, or interaction is contributing.

Take tamoxifen on the schedule provided, using a reminder if needed. Keep the prescribing team informed about anticoagulants, antidepressants, supplements, and non-prescription products before starting or stopping them. If you miss a dose, follow the written instructions or ask a pharmacist rather than taking extra tablets.

Attend planned appointments and report changes in vision, mobility, sexual health, or mood. Do not stop treatment suddenly without a clinician’s advice; the team can weigh symptom relief against the reason endocrine therapy was selected.

Seek urgent care for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, or a painful swollen leg. Contact your oncology team promptly for new visual changes, severe headache, sudden weakness, or unusual bleeding. These symptoms require assessment because tamoxifen can rarely be associated with clotting or other significant problems, while many less serious explanations are also possible.

Ask what tumour finding supports tamoxifen, what benefit the team expects, how long treatment is planned, which interactions matter, and what monitoring you need. Ask whether symptoms affecting sexual function or mood can be treated without interrupting the cancer plan.
