What should you know about systemic rheumatoid arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis happens when immune activity inflames the lining of joints. It commonly causes joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, often involving both sides of the body; morning stiffness may last longer than ordinary stiffness. Because it is systemic, inflammation can also affect areas such as the eyes, lungs, skin, blood vessels, or heart. Symptoms vary, and joint symptoms do not prove this diagnosis by themselves.

Arrange assessment for persistent or recurring swollen joints, hand symptoms, or morning stiffness. A clinician may use an examination, blood tests, and imaging to guide diagnosis and treatment. Take prescribed medicines consistently, discuss anti-inflammatory medication safely, balance activity with rest, and use gentle range-of-motion work when advised. Report new symptoms outside the joints.

Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, sudden weakness, vision loss, a very hot painful joint with fever, or rapidly worsening general illness. Contact your rheumatology team promptly if swelling or stiffness suddenly escalates or medicine causes a concerning reaction.
