What should you know about syphilitic laryngitis?

The larynx contains the vocal cords. Inflammation there can produce a rough, weak or breathy voice, throat discomfort, cough or difficulty projecting the voice. Syphilis can affect several parts of the body, so a clinician considers it alongside other explanations rather than diagnosing it from hoarseness alone.

Common Cold and Acid Reflux can also irritate the throat or voice box. A GP may examine your mouth and neck, ask about the timing of symptoms and arrange tests or referral for a closer look at the larynx. Sore Throat or Hoarse Voice that persists, returns or changes should be assessed.

Book a GP Consultation if hoarseness does not settle, especially if you have a relevant infection history, a persistent throat lesion or symptoms outside the throat. Rest your voice, drink fluids and avoid smoking or inhaled irritants while waiting. Do not whisper for long periods, because that can also strain the voice.

If syphilis is diagnosed, use the prescribed treatment and attend follow-up. Tell the clinician about vision, hearing, skin, genital or neurological symptoms, as these details can change the assessment.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing throat swelling, coughing blood or sudden severe voice change. These signs may reflect airway or other serious problems and should not be attributed to syphilis or reflux without examination.
