What should you know about syphilis without sex?

Syphilis spreads through contact with an infectious sore or rash, often during intimate contact. A person may not notice the sore, may have had contact that did not feel sexual, or may be asking about an old infection found during routine testing. Transmission from a pregnant person to a baby is another route. Casual contact such as sharing cups, toilet seats or swimming pools does not spread syphilis.

The infection can move through stages and may cause no obvious symptoms between them. A blood test can show signs of infection, but results need clinical interpretation because some tests remain reactive after treatment. A clinician may ask about past treatment, symptoms, pregnancy and possible contact without making assumptions about your history.

A widespread rash, fever or a sore that does not heal also deserves timely review, even if you feel otherwise well.
