What should you know about syphilis osteomyelitis?

Osteomyelitis means inflammation and infection within bone. When syphilis is involved, the infection can affect bone directly and may cause deep pain, tenderness, swelling, or reduced movement, although symptoms can be subtle. Clinicians may combine a history, examination, blood tests, imaging, and sometimes a sample to clarify the cause. Other infections can look similar, so the diagnosis should not be made from symptoms alone.

Arrange prompt medical review if syphilis is known, suspected, or untreated and bone pain develops. Take prescribed antimicrobial treatment exactly as directed and tell clinicians about prior treatment, allergies, pregnancy, and other medicines. Keep follow-up appointments so symptoms, blood results, and bone findings can be reviewed. Do not self-treat persistent bone pain with leftover antibiotics.

Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening pain, fever with shaking chills, confusion, weakness, new loss of movement, or redness and drainage over a painful area. A new neurological symptom or inability to use an affected limb also needs immediate assessment.
