What should you know about syphilis hepatitis?

Syphilis is an infection that can affect more than the skin or genital area. In some people it may be linked with liver inflammation, which clinicians may call hepatitis. Possible features include tiredness, nausea, discomfort under the right ribs, dark urine, pale stools, or yellowing of the eyes or skin. These signs have many possible causes, including viral hepatitis, medicines, alcohol-related injury, and gallbladder problems. Testing is needed to identify the cause and check how the liver is functioning.

Contact a clinician if you have liver-related symptoms alongside a new rash, painless sore, swollen glands, or a possible sexual exposure. Explain all medicines, supplements, alcohol use, vaccination history, and sexual-health concerns. Assessment may include syphilis testing, liver blood tests, and tests for other causes of hepatitis. If syphilis is diagnosed, follow the prescribed antibiotic plan and attend follow-up. Do not stop a regular medicine or take someone else’s antibiotics without medical advice.

Seek urgent care for yellowing skin with severe vomiting, marked drowsiness, confusion, bleeding, intense abdominal pain, or rapidly worsening illness. Prompt assessment is also needed for eye pain, vision changes, hearing changes, severe headache, weakness, or balance problems.
