Synovial fluid and knee swelling

Synovial fluid normally lubricates the knee, but the joint lining can produce extra fluid when it is irritated. A rapid increase after twisting or a sports injury can occur with an ACL tear or meniscus tear. Gradual swelling may accompany knee osteoarthritis. A Baker's cyst can create fullness behind the knee, while knee bursitis affects a fluid-filled sac outside the main joint. Gout can trigger a hot, painful inflammatory response. The amount of swelling and the way it developed do not identify one diagnosis on their own.

For a mild swelling after activity, reduce aggravating movement, use a wrapped cold pack for short periods, and elevate the leg if comfortable. Arrange assessment when swelling persists, returns, limits bending, or follows a significant injury. A clinician may examine stability and range of motion, use imaging, or recommend joint aspiration. Removing fluid can ease pressure and allow testing for blood, crystals, or infection; it should be performed by a trained professional.

Seek urgent care for a hot, red, very painful knee with fever or feeling unwell, because infection needs rapid treatment. Get prompt help after an injury if the knee cannot bear weight, has a marked deformity, becomes suddenly very tense, or is accompanied by numbness or a pale or cold foot. Sudden calf swelling or breathlessness also requires immediate attention.
